The first congregation of this church was organized by the Particular Baptists about the year of 1796. In the year 1797 Elder David Barrow, a cultured and talented gentleman from the state of Virginia, became its first pastor and continued in this service until his death in 1823. He was followed by Elder "Raccoon" John Smith, who baptized 114 new members his first year.

Elder John Smith began to preach a fuller gospel, as he saw it, and by the year 1826 had so successfully taught his congregation that all but two or three families followed him out of the faith of their fathers into the Christian Church Movement. There was no abrupt separation from the Baptist brotherhood; the congregation simply ceased to send a report or letter to the Association, so that by the year 1826 they no longer regarded themselves as a Baptist Church. In a few years the congregation assumed the name Christian.

The first church building was a rude log structure built where the Sarah E. Winn Home now stands. With the growth of the congregation a second building (part log and part brick) was built on High Street just behind where the Baptist church now stands. The congregation was worshiping in this building when Elder Smith was called to the pastorate. About the year 1830 another church was built on West Locust Street between Maysville and Bank Streets.

In 1838 a disgraceful political quarrel split the congregation and the larger group moved out and built a house of worship on the corner of Bank and Main. This building burned in 1863 during the civil war and in 1867 another brick building was erected on the site.

In 1875, Betty Jamison Reed, wife of Judge Richard Reed, became the first Vice President of the newly organized Kentucky Christian Women's Association.

This church has sponsored Boy Scout programs since 1930 and Girl Scout programs since the early 40's. These programs are still active in our church.

In 200 years this church has been served by 28 pastors, our present pastor is the 29th. We have also given to the ministry 9 pastors. Three of them have been lay pastor: Bobby Cratzer, Mt. Zion; Menifee Haddix, a rural church; Lowell Fields, Hazel Green; six to be ordained ministers: A.R. Robertson, Elgin Smith, Franklin McGuire, Joyce McGuire, Charles Pieratt, and Jeanette Clay Lucas.

With the rich history and tradition of over 200 years, the resources and potential within the membership of the congregation, and with the power of Spirit of God given to us, we press on into the next 200 years in our quest to be the Church of Jesus Christ by Reaching Out With Christ.
